A strong ‘me’ is essential for creating a strong ‘we’.
In his new book, Seven Principles for Making Your Relationships Work, the counselor God has used to help lead the transformation in our personal lives and marriage, Dr. Michael Semon writes:
“To be connected with another [person] and be yourself simultaneously is the standard for healthy relationships… A weak ‘me’ equals a weak ‘we’.”
—Dr. Michael Semon
I believe that the converse is also true:
A strong ‘me’ is essential for creating a strong ‘we’.
That’s why in the pursuit of building a strong marriage or experiencing a great dating relationship, this principle is essential: Instead of LOOKING for Mr. or Mrs. ‘Right,’ BECOME Mr. or Mrs. ‘Right’.
Instead of LOOKING for the right person, BECOME the right person.
Or, as one person said it: “Become the person the person you’re looking for is looking for.”
In their book, Real Relationships: From Bad to Better and Good to Great, Drs. Les and Leslie Parrott wise write:
“If you try to find intimacy with another person before achieving a sense of identity on your own… If you try to experience a relationship with another person before you do the hard work of becoming a whole and healthy person yourself… all your relationships will become an attempt to complete yourself and they will end in disaster.” —Drs. Les and Leslie Parrott
My marriage gets stronger as I get stronger: spiritually, morally, emotionally, mentally, relationally, and physically. Yours does, tooo.
I love Paul’s prayer for believers in 1 Thessalonians 5:23-24.
“May God himself, the God who makes everything holy and whole, make you holy and whole, put you together—spirit, soul, and body—and KEEP YOU FIT for the coming of our Master, Jesus Christ. The One who called you is completely dependable. If he said it, he’ll do it!” —1 Thessalonians 5:23-24 MSG
“Me” getting stronger = “We” getting stronger.
